Description:

A Novel of the piney woods of south Georgia

"I have just finished your novel [THIS IS ADAM] and I certainly do like it. It's a real accomplishment." Flannery O'Connor, in letter to Brainard Cheney (1958)

"In Cheney's THIS IS ADAM, the reader is rewarded by a picture, a vision, of contemporary life which he will find in the work of no other contemporary novelist." Caroline Gordon, author and literary scholar

Georgia in the pinelands. 1910. On his death bed, Colonel Marcellus Hightower asks Adam Atwell to look after his legacy and his family-a legacy of thousands of acres of pine forests. And to help the Colonel's widow, Lucy, a Charleston bride and mother living in the "wild lands" of the Ocmulgee and Altamaha River basin in south Georgia.

This taut, thrilling novel, first published in 1958, brings to life a tale of small town Georgia a century ago. Author Cheney drew from events in his own life. He takes us into two worlds-that of Adam, the mixed-race black man and Lucy, the "Charleston bride," now widow, as together they fight corruption and greed. And reach a stunning final resolution of the fight.

Adam, a mixed-race black man-his mother once a slave, his father her abusive owner-navigates the world of the segregated south of the early 1900s.

Respected by whites and blacks alike, Adam farms the Hightower lands. He knows the ways of the great rivers and pine forests like no other. In his younger days, he rafted timber all the way to Darien by the sea. Rescued by Colonel Hightower from a life in prison, he owes a debt of gratitude to him and his family. But now-to protect the widow's lands-he faces the greatest challenge of his life.

Lucy, the young widow left with three children, struggles to hold onto their legacy, cramped by the small provincial southern town of Riverton. She fears for her growing son, Marcellus, who Adam takes under his wing, initiating him into the mysteries of adulthood.

A land deal promises to make her and some local businessmen rich. When they betray the widow Hightower, Adam is her only line of defense. He brings all his resources to bear, even fighting for his life when attacked by a hired assassin.

All the while, Lucy wants to return to Charleston. Her childhood sweetheart comes back into her life. He offers a home for her and her children, a new start far away from the rough, "wild lands" of the river country. Will she accept his proposal?

Adam, resourceful and knowing, proves to be the better man, the honest man, the heroic man.
