Description:

A new, beautifully laid-out edition of George Eliot's 1859 classic novel, Adam Bede. Adam Bede is centered on a love "rectangle" involving four characters in the fictional close-knit rural community of Hayslope: the beautiful but self-absorbed Hetty Sorrel; Captain Arthur Donnithorne, the young squire who seduces her; Adam Bede, her suitor; and Dinah Morris, Hetty's cousin, a fervent, virtuous and beautiful Methodist lay preacher. An unexpected pregnancy throws all of their lives into turmoil. Immediately recognized as a masterpiece of literary significance, Adam Bede is one of George Eliot's most acclaimed works and is still the subject of study and interpretation and is considered to be one of the finest novels in the English language.

George Eliot, the pen name for Mary Ann Evans (1819 -1880) was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is known for her seven novels, Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Romola(1862-63), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72) and Daniel Deronda (1876). Most of her works are set in provincial England and are appreciated for their realism, psychological insight, and sense of place. Her novel Middlemarch is considered to be the "greatest novel in the English language" by many critics, and she is named among the most important and influential novelists of her era. Her works have been the subject of numerous TV and film adaptations and remain among the most beloved and critically acclaimed works for all time.
