King Edward the Last

In December 1936 King Edward VIII is forced to make a choice between the crown and the love of his life, Wallis Simpson. If he chooses to marry Wallis, a divorcee, he must abdicate. History says he will throw away his crown for love, but what if he did not?

The government is happy for Edward to keep seeing Wallis. It only refuses to accept any thought of marriage. What if he stays on the throne with Wallis as his mistress? By taking this path he would be doing no more than upholding a centuries-old royal tradition of keeping such a woman. Could he, would he accept that? And what of Wallis? Would she be happy to simply just be with him, a woman forever in the shadows?

Edward is a man of ambition, Britain is in the grip of the Great Depression and people are dying of malnutrition and the cold. He sees the plight of the workers, the poor, the starving and the dispossessed and demands that something must be done. Meanwhile Europe has seen the rise of Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin, all of them powerful and warlike dictators. And there is strife in Spain and in China, communism threatening to take over the world? What is this King Edward prepared to do in the face of such challenges and threats? The military swear an oath of allegiance to their king or queen, not to the government. Could he seize back the lost powers of the sovereign, be the next strong man of Europe? How will this affect his realm, Europe and the course of human history?

Will we, the succeeding generations, be as we are?
