Description:

Large sized, high-speed turbo-machines must be designed for reliable operation over their planned service lives to minimize potentially huge forced outage costs and to attain high operational availability. An important part of achieving these objectives is to perform vibration design analyses for producing equipment that runs with as low vibration as practical for all modes of operation. Accordingly, rotor dynamics technology and design processes need to continue to advance, including updating engineering documentation. This book has been written to support these requirements.

Rotor dynamics model creation and analyses are essential parts of new machine design and development for lateral, torsional and axial vibration. These processes are also needed for addressing vibration problems or failure investigations for equipment in service. Lack of sufficient experience by analysts can result in creation of vibration mathematical models that are inadequate for these purposes. Reliance on sophisticated analytical tools that are commercially available will not help achieve needed accuracy of results if inadequate model data are used.

Poor vibration modeling has resulted in costly design mistakes during machine development and for incorrectly diagnosing and addressing vibration problems after entering service. The author's motivation for writing this book is that, with the exception of specialized training courses offered by some Technical Organizations and Institutes, there is little information available in the public domain that provides sufficient practical guidance for preparing good rotor dynamics models and understanding the expected accuracy of rotor dynamics results when using these models.

This publication is not intended to deal in any depth with development of the finite element matrices used in rotor dynamics analyses as this is well covered in the technical literature. Definition and application of the most suitable elements and reason for their selection is treated in several Case Studies. The information that is provided is judged of most use to those wishing to improve their understanding of rotor dynamics fundamentals as well as modeling/analysis/evaluation procedures needed to address design and operational problems. This should put readers in a better position to correctly interpret analysis results and understand calculation limitations. General guidance is provided on machinery vibration measurement and evaluation procedures and flexible rotor balancing with reference to International and ANSI Vibration Standards.

This book is intended mainly for readers throughout the world who are relatively new to the rotor dynamics field in OEM and Machinery User communities and for use by Colleges and Universities as a teaching and reference text. What is presented is influenced by the industrial experience of the author working for machinery manufacturers for many years.
