I sit in front of the computer terminal and program.
The year is 1977. I type into the computer line by line.
The computer consists of a terminal with a roll of paper and a central unit.
The programs are punched on punched tape. The computer has no hard drive or screen.
But a hard copy of the program code is possible.
If you enter "run" into the machine, the program is executed and the
result is printed on the paper roll. The programming language is a simple line basic.
This interpreter language is called "single-user basic".
The computer belongs to the educational institution.
Allegedly it cost around 30,000 euros.
Computers are way too expensive, I think it will hardly be possible
to buy a computer for private use.
I am a "programming freak" of the "pre-computer era"
and I really regret that this "miracle machine" is not at home.
Unfortunately I can only program two hours a week.
I'll take the printout of the program home with me.
In this way "computerless" I would like to trace the program sequence
by HAND on the PAPER and add any additions.
Alan Turing, the well-known mathematician, presented a calculation
method (algorithm) for a "computer chess program" in 1953 in the
book "DIGITAL COMPUTERS APPLIED TO GAMES" on page 292.
In 1948 he designed the TUROCHAMP chess program together
with David Champernowne.
John Maynard Smith, the mathematician and biologist,
had his chess program "SOMA" played against "Machiavelli" in 1961.
These classic "chess machine competitions" were held without computers
due to the lack of computers. All calculations were carried out by HAND,
the work of the "computer program" was simulated.
Complete numerical examples and chess calculations of chess games are hard to find.
